Abstract:

Formal and snapshot portraits of blues artists taken primarily at various festivals and other concerts around the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1980s. Among the more noteworthy performers are Etta James, Brownie McGhee, Percy Mayfield, Carla Thomas, Bo Diddley, John Lee Hooker, Albert King, Charlie Musselwhite, The Soul Stirrers, Joe Liggins and His Honeydrippers, and Queen Ida and the Bon Temps Zydeco Band. Among the festivals documented are the Marin County Blues Festival, San Mateo County Blues Festival, Sonoma County Blues Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival and the Monterey Blues Festival. An unidentified photographer, confirmed not to be William Carr, appears in several images. Also includes a group of prints and negatives, chiefly of scenes depicting backstage activities at various concerts, taken by William's wife Ellen Carr.
