Abstract:
Photo album contains 238 black and white and color photographs of a post-war mission to Japan and nearby countries. Album
belonged and is inscribed to Josiah E. Dubois (Jr.), a staff member of the U.S. Reparations Mission to Japan. Photos include
mission staff, street scenes, industry, destruction from the war, local peoples, shrines, and rural scenes. Locations are
primarily Tokyo but also include Nagasaki, Hiroshima, Osaka, and Kyoto (Japan); Beijing (China); Honolulu (Hawaii); Manila
(Philippines); Kwajalein, Johnston Island and Guam. There are additional loose photos, including two wedding photos, as well
as a personnel list for the General Counsel's Office.

Josiah E. Dubois, Jr. (1912-1983) was an American lawyer and government official who was best known for his report on the
government's lack of action to aid Jews in Europe, which led to the creation of the War Refugee Board. He also served as a
special assistant to the Secretary of the Treasury, 1944-1945; general counsel of the War Refugee Board, 1944; member of the
Allied Reparations Commission, Moscow, 1945; member of the U.S. delegation, Berlin Conference (Potsdam), 1945; and deputy
chief of counsel for War Crimes in charge of I.G. Farben case, Nuremberg, Germany, 1947-1948.
