Abstract:

Transcribed diary of Colombus Cecil Stephens, titled "Trip Across the Plains 1857", about his and his family's journey from Ohio to California. The diary describes their camping experience at various locations across the plains and their encounters with other travelers, traders, and Indian tribes. Included at the end is a letter to Ebenezer D. Stephens in Hardin, Ohio from William H. Stephens in Ione, Amador County, California about arriving safely in California after over five months of dangerous traveling, and a note, possibly by the transcriber, stating: "This concludes copies of all the documentary evidence I have in my possession at this date and place of our trip across the plains, Los Angeles, May 13, 1909".
