"Seaman's Institute founded in 1893 by Rev. James Fell ; building construction 1906-1907 under Rev. Frank Stone ; architects: Wright, Rushford, and Cahill ; building demolished 1977." (t.p.) "Significance: The Seamen's Institute building was one of the last buildings on the San Francisco waterfront that had a history of providing religious services, social events, and practical support for overseas seamen. ... The Seamen's Institute's first home was destroyed in the earthquake and fire of 1906, a new building, the subject of this report, was built in 1907. ... In 1919 the Institute move to a new location on Clay Street, near the waterfront. A subsequent occupant of the Seamen's Institute building was Simpson and Fisher, sailmakers. ... This small firm occupied the building from 1919 until 1984"--Page 1.
