Annotations, present on all drawings, include description of plant; reference to publication in which the species is illustrated or listed; and, for most drawings, date of execution. Some annotations include location of drawing: "San Francisco".
All drawings include annotations referring to various geological survey efforts: "U.S. exploration 40th parallel", "U.S. Survey 35th parallel", "U.S.S. Cal Durand & Hilgard", "U.S.S. Cal Newberry", "U.S.S. Cal Utah &c". Most drawings also include annotations referring to page or plate numbers that correspond to illustrations or listings in one of two publications by Sereno Watson: Botany (vol. V of the Report of the geological exploration of the fortieth parallel..., published 1871) and Botany (published by the Geological Survey of California, 1876). While no drawings are signed, most annotations resemble the hand of Watson as found on similar drawings in other collections.
