Abstract:

Family portraits and snapshots pertaining to Wing Soo Hoo of Oakland, Calif. and multiple generations of his descendants. Includes multiple portraits of Wing. The bulk of the collection pertains to Wing's son Donald Soo Hoo's service in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, chiefly depicting Donald and his fellow soldiers, in Europe during wartime and at home. One snapshot depicts a U.S. military chaplain posing beside a German concentration camp incinerator. Collection also includes photographs of Donald's mother Lo Shee Shoo Hoo and other family members, and a panoramic group portrait of members of the Chinese Presbyterian Church, Oakland, Calif., taken on Easter Sunday, April 20, 1930 (oversize C folder).

Yee Wing Soo Hoo (1858-1944) emigrated from China to the United States in 1882, eventually settling in Oakland, Calif. He was the proprietor of Soo Wing & Co., selling Chinese art goods, furnishings, etc., located in Oakland's Chinatown. Wing's son Donald Soo Hoo (1922-2009) served in the U.S. military during World War II as a member of the U.S. Army Air Forces' 155th Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron.
