Abstract:

Interviews conducted 1981-1982 by Malca Chall for the Regional Oral History Office, Bancroft Library, with individuals involved in state, regional and local land-use planning in California. Volume 1: State and Regional Planning Initiatives, 1950-1975. Interviewees, and titles of interviews, as follows: Francis C. Lindsay. The Assembly Committee on Conservation, Planning, and Public Works Sets a Course Towards Local, Regional, and State Planning; Samuel E. Wood. Administration, Research, and Analysis in Behalf of Environmental Quality; Richard Carpenter. The League of California Cities and the Planning Process; William R. MacDougall. The County Supervisors Association of California and the Planning Process; Alfred E. Heller. California Tomorrow: A Voice for State and Regional Planning. Appended: Photocopies of documentary material supporting the interview. With this, as v. 1A (box): additional documentary material.

Kent, Jr. Professor and Political Activist: A Career in City and Regional Planning in the San Francisco Bay Area. Extensive comments on work as San Francisco city planning director and mayor's deputy for development, and on People for Open Space; Victor Jones. Political Scientist: Observer and Consultant in Metropolitan Governance; Stanley Scott. Author, Editor, and Consultant: A Participant From the Institute of Governmental Studies. Discusses his role as assemblyman in debate and passage of pertinent laws; Bil Press. From PCL to OPR: A Land-Use Activist, Outside State Government, Moves Inside. Discusses his work as executive director of Planning and Conservation League and as deputy director of Office of Planning and Research; Paul H. Sedway. An Urban Planner Reviews Past Land-Use Planning Programs and considers the future. Primarily re his consulting assignments; Ilene Weinreb. A City Official Analyzes the Impact of State and Local Planning Mandates on Local Government. Discusses her service on several regional governing boards and as Hayward city councilwoman and mayor.
