Note:

Ruth Ann Holmes was born in Montana on December 14, 1898 (although her diary indicates 1891). She moved to California with family members in 1917, lived in Oakland, and worked in the beauty department of the San Francisco Emporium. In 1937 Holmes moved to the Philippines and operated a beauty salon in Manila's Bay View Hotel. On January 30, 1942, after Japanese forces invaded and conquered the Philippines, Holmes was interned with other Americans at the Santo Tomas Internment Camp. Before the camp was liberated on February 3, 1945, she witnessed numerous air raids on Manila by American planes. After the war Homes remained in the Philippines as companion and assistant to Eugene A. Perkins, aprominent attorney with whom she had been interned. She nursed him though his final illness until his death in 1956, and remained in the Philippines while Perkins' will was being contested. Holmes returned to Oakland in 1960, and died on May 5, 1971.
