Title:

Rolph Family Trip to Hawaii Photograph Album, 3/24/1920 - 4/27/1920

Abstract:

The tapa cloth bound volume contains 114 photographic prints documenting Mayor James Rolph, Jr.'s family trip to and from Honolulu, Hawaii. Rolph Jr., wife Annie, daughters Annette and Georgina, and son Jimmy (James) departed San Francisco on March 25 on the SS Matsonia and disembarked in Honolulu. The activities on the ship include shuffleboard on deck and socializing. The family stayed at the Moana Hotel in Waikiki and the photographs depict both exterior and interiors of the hotel. Activities on the island primarily include swimming, sea kayaking, surfing, boating and sunbathing on the beach. One photograph has the hand-written caption "Surf riding - Diamond Head." Jimmy and Annette are photographed with Duke Kahanamoku. The Rolph family returned from Honolulu on S.S. Wilhelmina on April 21 and arrived to San Francisco on April 27, 1920. One political cartoon "Seeing Hawaii with Mayor Rolph" is pasted on a back page. Although no photographer is identified, it is assumed that the photographer was a family member based on the familiarity and poses of the family members in the photographs.
