Abstract:

Printed obituary of Mary Todd in the American Presbyterian newspaper with details of her life and family history. The obituary, composed by her son-in-law or daughter-in-law, indicates that she was a native of Louisa County, Virginia; the wife of Dr. Andrew Todd, an eminent physician and surgeon in the Army of our Revolution; the third daughter of the Rev. John Todd of the Presbyterian Church in Virginia and his wife [Margaret] Thompson; the sister of Rev. John Todd of Indiana; the sister of Mrs. Anne Todd of Fayette County, Kentucky, whose husband is General Robert Todd; the sister of Mrs. Eliza McCalla [Elizabeth Todd], whose husband is Rev. Daniel McCalla, D.D., who graduated from the College of New Jersey in Princeton in 1776 [1766] and, for many years, served as Pastor of the Independent or Congregational Church and the Parish of Christ's Church, South Carolina; the sister of the late Mrs. Margaret Moore [Margaret Todd] of Lexington, Kentucky, who died of cholera in 1833 and who was married to Rev. James Moore, the first Rector of the Episcopal Church in the city and the first President of Transylvania University; the sister of Mrs. Purrington [Sarah Todd], who left behind a son when she died in Virginia and who was married to Rev. [Elisha] Purrington, a worthy minister of the Baptist Church. The obituary also includes a passage from the Western Citizen which states that she passed away on January 24th, 1839 [1838] at age 74 in her residence in the vicinity of Paris, [Kentucky].
