Abstract:

Contains correspondence and writings of Dr. Chew, along with some documents relating to his newspaper, Chung Sai Yat Bo, including bylaws, miscellaneous business papers, and printed materials relating to the Kuomintang (KMT). Also includes family papers, consisting of his children's textbooks, newsclippings, and scrapbooks, along with a few of Chew's personal ledgers of expenses and some correspondence.

Note:

Ng Poon Chew was born near Canton, China in 1866 and left home for California in the care of a relative, arriving in San Jose in 1881. He converted to Christianity, and was graduated and ordained as a Presbyterian minister from the San Francisco Theological Seminary in 1892. In 1898, he resigned from the ministry and founded the first Chinese American daily newspaper, the Chung Sai Yat Po. He also lectured widely across America. Chew was married and the father of 5 children: Maisie, Effie, Rose, Edward, and Caroline.
