Abstract:

The scrapbook of loose album pages includes 28 photographic prints and 17 place cards between 1900 and 1910. Mrs. James Rolph, Jr. is the creator of the scrapbook and the contents document their life before Rolph, Jr. became mayor of San Francisco. The front page has the hand-written title "Some of the Family and a Few Fiends." The prints consist chiefly of portraits of James Rolph, Jr. and the Rolph family and friends. One photograph is captioned "Bohemian Grove, Monte Rio, June 12, 1910" and includes Rolph, Jr. and his wife Annie. One page has a pen and ink sketch with photographs of Rolph, Jr. mounted on the page. The bulk of the place cards are Mrs. James Rolph, Jr.'s with a few inscribed "Jim" or "Mr. Rolph."

Miss Annie Marshall Reid was born in San Francisco in 1872 to John and Annie Reid of Scottish descent. Miss Reid grew up in the Mission District with her father, who was a local businessman. Miss Reid married James Rolph, Jr. on June 26, 1900. Daughter Annette was born in 1901, followed by a son, James, in 1904, and daughter Georgina in 1905. Their home at 25th Street and San Jose Avenue in the Mission District served as the family headquarters until Rolph's death on June 2, 1934. Mrs. Annie Rolph died on September 23, 1956.
