The Mission Play, a historical pageant written by John S. McGroarty dramatizing the history of California's Franciscan missions, was first staged near Mission San Gabriel in 1912. Many of the players were of Native American and Mexican American heritage. During the play's eighth season, Frederick Warde played the role of Junipero Serra and Mrs. Tyrone Power played Señora Yorba.
Albert Walter Witzel, a prominent portrait photographer of the entertainment industry, founded Witzel Studios in Los Angeles in 1909.
