John Michael McCloskey was born in Eugene, Oregon in 1934. He attended Harvard as a college student and graduated from the law school at the University of Oregon. In 1961 he was hired as the first field organizer for the Sierra Club, and throughout the 1960's he helped lead the club's campaigns to save several wilderness areas in the northwest and establish Redwoods National Park and North Cascades National Park. After the contentious resignation of David Brower in 1969 McCloskey became the Sierra Club's Executive Director. He led the club as it fought to preserve Alaskan and eastern United States' wilderness areas, and supported the anti-pollution environmental agendas of the 1970's. After 16 years as Executive Director McCloskey stepped down and took up the role of chairman where he devoted his time to conservation policy. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the John Muir Award of the Sierra Club (1979), the Fred Packard Award of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (2003), and the Conservation Award of the Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs (2004).
