Abstract:

Contains printed materials, tree census and inventory list, ephemera, flyers, correspondence, newspaper clippings, 20 color photographs (5 x 7) of protesters and tree sitters, three posters, two t-shirts, etc. related to a protest movement, known as Save the Oaks, against a University of California, Berkeley decision to remove coastal live oak trees on campus to construct a new sports training facility. Also includes a small amount of materials on other protests at UC Berkeley including the Coaltion to Free the UC, Save Strawberry Canyon, and the Phoenix Project for UC Democracy.

The University of California, Berkeley Memorial Oak Grove controversy, also known as Save the Oaks, arose over the planned removal of coastal oak trees in preparation for the construction of a new student athletic training center at Memorial Stadium. The university's actions sparked three lawsuits, as well as a tree sit-in that ran from December 2006 to September 2008, when the trees in question were finally cut down.
