Five handwritten letters (16 p.) from a man working as a gold miner in Northern California to his friend and former Williamsville
schoolmate in Wisconsin. He gives details about his mining work and responds to his friend's inquiry about joining him in
California or going to Pike's Peak to find gold. Newton advises Thayer against going to Pike's Peak, describes the cost of
living in California, and warns against traveling overland to California due to Indian attacks. Instead he advises Thayer
to commence a trip in January via the Isthmus of Panama to insure arriving at the best time for finding work. One letter is
addressed from Pine Grove, California. Also includes one original envelope return addressed from Table Rock, California for
a Howland Flats letter dated Oct. 31, 1857. One of the letters is addressed from Pine Grove, California.
