In 1850, Morris Greenberg left Paris, France, accompanied by his wife and two children; they reached California in 1851. In
1854, he established the "M. Greenberg, Eagle Brass Foundry," at 58 Halleck St., in San Francisco. In the 1850s and 1860s,
the firm produced bronze spikes for wooden ships and horse-collar pipes and nozzles for hydraulic mining. The firm also invented
the California-type fire hydrant that maintained constant pressure and was more reliable than the type used in the East.
