Miya Rodolfo-Sioson was born in Manila, Philippines, on January 2, 1968. Her family immigrated to Ames, Iowa that same year.
She attended the University of Iowa, graduating in December 1991. In November 1991, she was one of six people shot by Gang
Lu, a deranged graduate student. Rodolfo-Sioson was paralyzed from the neck down. She moved to Berkeley, California, in 1996,
where she became a disability rights advocate, serving as a member of the city's Commission on Disability from 1998-2006.
She died of cancer on December 3, 2008. A documentary about her life, "Miya of the Quiet Strength," was released in 2009.
