Mahesh and Ishwar Chandra family collection, BANC MSS 2019/205, The Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley.
Mahesh and Ishwar Chandra were immigrant brothers from India who settled in San Francisco. Mahesh's wife, Kala, had also come to San Francisco in 1915 with her first husband Vaishno Das Bagai, who immigrated to the United States to work on the Indian independence movement without fear of being persecuted by the British government. Vaishno joined the Gadar Party and became a naturalized United States citizen in 1921. His citizenship would be nullified after the United States Supreme Court decision in U.S. vs. Bhagat Singh Thind in 1923. Vaishno committed suicide in 1928. His wife Kala then married Mahesh Chandra, a close friend of the Bagai family. The Chandra brothers were active in the Gadar and related movements and they collected all the literature in this collection.
