Consists mostly of printed materials focusing on the Indian inpedepence movement in the United States, Canada, and Japan in
the early twentieth century. Also included is some literature published in Britain and India on topices such as immigration,
religion, culture and political events relating to Indians and Indians abroad. Printed materials consist of newspapers, bulletins,
newsletters, pamphlets, and books. The collection also includes some manuscript material, mainly written by Ishwar Chandra.
Prominent figures and organizations represented in the collection include Ishwar Chandra, Taraknath Das, Manebendra N. Roy,
Syud Hossain, the Gadar Party, the Hindustan Association of America, the Indian National Party, the Indian National Congress,
the India Home Rule League, the Friends of Freedom for India. Serial titles represented in the collection include Bande Mataram
(1913), Indian Sociologist (1914), The Aryan (1912), India and Canada (1917, 1930), The Hindustanee (1914), and The New Orient
(1923).

Mahesh and Ishwar Chandra family collection, BANC MSS 2019/205, The Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley.
Mahesh and Ishwar Chandra were immigrant brothers from India who settled in San Francisco. Mahesh's wife, Kala, had also come
to San Francisco in 1915 with her first husband Vaishno Das Bagai, who immigrated to the United States to work on the Indian
independence movement without fear of being persecuted by the British government. Vaishno joined the Gadar Party and became
a naturalized United States citizen in 1921. His citizenship would be nullified after the United States Supreme Court decision
in U.S. vs. Bhagat Singh Thind in 1923. Vaishno committed suicide in 1928. His wife Kala then married Mahesh Chandra, a close
friend of the Bagai family. The Chandra brothers were active in the Gadar and related movements and they collected all the
literature in this collection.
