Martin Edward Malia (born March 14, 1924 in Springfield, Massachusetts - died November 19, 2004 in Oakland, California) o graduated from Yale University in 1944, and received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in history from Harvard University. Malia taught at Harvard from 1954 to 1958, before joining the U.C. Berkeley faculty. His major books include "Alexander Herzen and the Birth of Russian Socialism, 1812-1855" (1961); "Russia Under Western Eyes: from the Bronze Horseman to the Lenin Mausoleum" (1999); and "The Soviet Tragedy: A History of Socialism in Russia, 1917-1991" (1994).
