information. Includes photocopy of Janin's statement concerning his part in the diamond swindle, as well as photostatic copies
of a letter by Clarence King, 1872 Nov. 27 to Chief of Engineers, Brig. Gen. A.A. Humphreys, and S.F. Emmons field notebook
1113, from Records of the Geological Survey of the 40th Parallel from Record Group No. 57 in the National Archives. Also includes
an annotated U.P.R.R. map and miscellaneous printed material, along with correspondence between his son, Henry Covington Janin,
and Bruce A. Woodard concerning Woodard's research for a book about the diamond hoax.

Henry Janin, son of Louis Janin, distinguished counsel in mining litigation, was born in New Orleans in 1838. With his brother,
Louis Janin, he studied mining engineering in Germany before coming to California in 1861, establishing himself in San Francisco
in 1864, and becoming advisor to the Bank of California and Homestake Mine before his death in London in 1911.
