Creator/Contributor:

Washburn, Martin L., 1828-1903, creator, correspondent.

Abstract:

Handwritten letter from a Halifax, Massachusetts man working as an oxen driver near Mt. Diablo, California to his uncle back East. He writes of his arrival in San Francisco on July 4, 1852 and immediately leaving for the gold fields near Auburn, California. After trying his hand at gold mining with modest results, he returns to San Francisco before accepting work with William A. Shreves in the Mt. Diablo area. He writes of his wages, the cost of goods, health, etc. Also of note is his mention that he has heard news that Massachusetts had recently passed a "Maine Liquor Law", that is, a law prohibiting the use of alcohol other than for medicinal use.
