Martin A. Trow (born June 21,1926 in New York City ; died February 24, 2007 in Kensington, California) was one of higher
education's most influential and prolific writers. Much of his distinguished career was spent at the University of California,
Berkeley, Graduate School of Public Policy where he also served as Director of the Center for Studies in Higher Education.
Trow received a Ph.D. in sociology from Columbia University in 1956 and in 1957 came to Berkeley as an assistant professor
of sociology. He retired in 1993 and continued to write and do research until shortly before his death in 2007.
