Abstract:

Contains correspondence, research notes, materials relating to Graham's work in the UC Berkeley's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, consulting work, depositions in legal cases regarding stray voltage, interactions with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and writings. There is also a small amount of material about the Rice Computer project.

Born in 1926 in Jamaica, Queens, Graham enrolled in the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn at the age of sixteen. He completed his degree after a stint inthe US Navy, attended Harvard for a master's degree in engineering science and applied physics, and attained his PhD back at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in 1952. While earning his degree and afterward,he worked at Brookhaven National Laboratory where he participated in the development of the MANIAC-2 computer for Los Alamos. In 1957 he joined the Rice Institute engineering faculty where he led the project that built the Rice Institute Computer. In 1966 he accepted a position at UC Berkeley as Professor of Electrical Engineering and Associate Director of the Campus Computer Center through 1968. He led the Computer Science Department from 1970 through 1973 when the department merged with the Electrical Engineering Department. He remained a professor in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences department until his reitrement in 1994, after which he continued to participate in department and professional activities. His work outside of the universtiy ranged from researching the impact of stray voltage on dairy cows to consulting on projects for the Bay area Rapid Transit System (BART). Graham died in 2015.
