Abstract:

Contains handwritten personal letters to and from various members of the Moses Emery family. Many of the letters are addressed to Moses Emery from his son, Thornton C. Emery. Some others are from another son, Charles C. Emery. Some are from Moses Emery to his children and other persons. A few are addressed to his wife, Sarah C. Emery. Several letters are from Charles C. Emery to his brother, George Addison Emery. Also includes a few letters from Moses Emery's grandchildren and unrelated persons. 42 letters in total.

Moses Emery (born July 16, 1794, Minot Corners, Maine; died 12 May 12, 1881) was a well-respected attorney from Saco, Maine. In 1823, he married Sarah Cutts Thornton and had several children including Thornton Cutts Emery, Charles Carroll Emery, and George Addison Emery. Thornton Cutts made his way to California and became a hay and coal dealer in Oakland. Charles Carroll made his way to Kansas to become a farmer and settled near Lawrence, Kansas. George Addison became a lawyer and remained in Saco, Maine, where he took over his father's law practice when he retired.
