Mary M. Bowman was a Los Angeles-based field worker for the Historical Survey Commission, which was created by the California State Legislature in 1915 for the purposes of evaluating preservation proposals and producing monographs on historic sites. In 1923, the Commission was replaced by the California State Historical Association, a coalition of historical societies from around the state. Bowman's work for the Commission primarily involved reporting on the historical papers of the older families of Southern California.
