Abstract:

Contains Milton S. Latham's letter of resignation from the governorship of California after the state legislature elected him to a newly vacant U.S. Senate seat, personal and official handwritten correspondence as governor, senator, and private citizen, and an addendum to a court brief involving the Stockton and Visalia Railroad Company. The correspondence includes a private letter Latham wrote to General Henry W. Halleck during the Civil War urging the general to consider forming political alliances with people connected to Lincoln's cabinet, particularly the Blair family, for the purpose of replacing General George McClellan as commander in chief of the Union Army. Also includes a typescript transcription of the letter to Halleck.

Milton Slocum Latham (May 23, 1827-March 4, 1882) was an American politician, and served as the sixth governor of California and as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate. Latham holds the distinction of having the shortest governorship in California history, lasting for five days between January 9 and January 14, 1860.
