Frederick John Bowlen (April 28, 1882-March 8, 1945) was appointed to the San Francisco Fire Department from the truckman's list on November 6, 1903 at the age of 21. He served the department continuously in various positions, achieving the ranks of Lieutenant in 1913 and Captain in 1916. He was appointed Battalion Chief on February 7, 1919. From 1929 until his retirement in 1944, he also served as the San Francisco Fire Department Historian.
