Abstract:

Chiefly slides, descriptive notes by Montoya and related reports documenting the relocation, restoration and installation of two sculptures by Carter, "Ram" and "Goddess of the forest", at City College of San Francisco (PIC box 1). "Ram" was relocated from one area of the CCSF campus to another in 1983. "Goddess" was relocated from Golden Gate Park to CCSF in 1986. Both projects occurred while Montoya was a student at CCSF. Also includes photographic prints depicting other works by Carter (PIC box 1); slides depicting the 1983 CCSF exhibition "Art and architecture: the marriage of true minds" pertaining to the sculpture, architecture and mural art at CCSF created by Carter, San Francisco architect Timothy Pflueger and Mexican muralist Diego Rivera (PIC box 1); original portrait drawings of Carter by Montoya (AX folder 1) and original linocut prints by Montoya based on those drawings (AX folder 2 and B folder 1); photographic prints depicting Carter and artist Emmy Lou Packard posing with a book on Rivera, and Carter, Montoya and CCSF art instructor Phil Pasquini posing before Rivera's mural "Pan-American Unity" at CCSF which includes a depiction of Carter (AX folder 3); a photographic print depicting Carter, Pflueger, Rivera, art collector Edward G. Robinson and art critic Ottorino Rhonchi posing before Carter's "Ram" sculpture at the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition (AX folder 4). Also includes a plaster cast of Carter's hand holding an axe (OBJ carton 1)

Dudley C. Carter (1891-1992) was born in New Westminster, Canada to pioneer parents; influenced during youth by totem pole carvings of Kwakiutl and Tlingit tribes of Pacific Northwest; moved to Washington State in 1928; participated in "Art in Action" program of Golden Gate International Exposition in 1940, where he befriended Diego Rivera and where he carved both "Ram" and "Goddess of the forest"; appointed artist-in-residence for King County Parks in 1987 and was active until the end of his life.
Emmanuel C. Montoya was born in Corpus Christi, Texas in 1952; of Lipan Apache and Mexican heritage; influenced by printmakers and muralists of Latin America, the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project and the Chicano Movement; studied at City College of San Francisco and San Francisco State University.
