Mildred Emmert Van Every was born in Hastings, Nebraska on May 8, 1896. She graduated from Hastings College in 1917 and later studied in New York and at the University of California, Berkeley with Alfred L. Kroeber. She worked for the Y.W.C.A. in Nebraska, Nevada, and Panama from 1917 to 1933. The following year, she began a long career with the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs in California, Arizona, and New Mexico. After she retired in 1958 she did volunteer work for the California League for American Indians and the American Friends Service Committee. Mildred Van Every died in Oakland on April 20, 1994.
