Abstract:

"Mixed Pickles," subtitled "Reminiscences of an Old Man Who Did Not Become President," is a 1931 typescript autobiography (104 p.) by Pierce, who describes himself as "at times trapper, hunter, canal builder, soldierette, musician, merchant, cowboy, banana planter, lawyer, judge, [and] chicken raiser." Among the various activities of his life, Pierce tells of his brief enlistment in the Army as a drummer boy in 1865, encounters with Indians in New Mexico, and his departure from Mexico in 1914 due to the revolution. In addition he describes life in New Mexico and Mexico as well as California, including San Francisco. Manuscript also contains a 1932 inscription to Mrs. McCracken Lyon.
Also includes carbon typescript of unpublished novel by Pierce, "Dark Planet: a Short Novel of California," 1930. Includes typed inscription, May 1932, to Mrs. Mattie McCracken Lyon, a schoolmate of Pierce's.
