Mary Abney and Joseph Parker correspondence fragments, 1717-1738Abstract:
Fragments of documents, probably excised from correspondence written in the 18th century, glued together to form one piece
of paper and then glue mounted to a larger piece of paper. Possibly collected for their value as samples of handwriting and
autographs of notable persons in English history. The various fragments have handwritten text including, "To Mrs. Mary Abney
May 28th 1717"; "Joseph Parker 1738"; "Joseph Parker"; and "I.W." (likely Isaac Watts).

Mary, Lady Abney (née Gunston, 1676-January 12, 1750) inherited the Manor of Stoke Newington in 1701 from her brother. She
had a great influence on the design and landscaping of Abney Park in London. She is known for having sheltered Dr. Isaac Watts,
a Nonconformist known as the father of English hymnody for his hundreds of hymns, as a house guest for 36 years. He was inspired
by her park in his writing of hymns and poems.
Joseph Parker was Lady Abney's steward and also served as Isaac Watts's amenuensis for many years.
