Matthew "Smitty" Schmidt, an anarchist, was convicted in 1916 for complicity in the Oct. 1, 1910 bombing of the Los Angeles Times building. He was released on parole 30 years later. He then married Elizabeth Livermore who was friends with Hubert and Florence Wyckoff. For more information on Schmidt see v. 2 of The Memoirs of Hubert C. Wyckoff, Jr. interviewed by Randall Jarrell.
