Robert Blum Woodward arrived in San Francisco in 1849, opening business as a merchant. He built a home on the corner of Mission
and 14th, which in 1866 opened to the public as Woodward's Gardens. It consisted of an art gallery, the gardens and a zoo.
Upon his death in 1879, the estate was inherited by his wife, Mary, and four children, Sarah B., Mary C., Helen J. and Robert
B.
