Creator/Contributor:

Littleton, Micajah, 1803-1880

Abstract:

Diary of Micajah Littleton documenting his overland journey to California from Independence, Mo., May to October of 1850. In addition to a descriptive journal he appended a detailed directional mileage log as if recording for future immigrants. Of special interest is documentation of all the graves passed en route. The diary ends with his trip from Nevada City, California through Grass Valley, Rough and Ready and the Bear River Valley to Nicholas and Fremont on the Sacramento River.
Letters from Micajah's son James E. Littleton to his younger brother Eugene M. Littleton, 1864-1866. James was serving in the California Second Cavalry Regiment, Company I. Initially stationed at Camp Bidwell, near Chico, Company I was transfered to Camp McDermitt on the Nevada-Oregon border to keep the peace with the local Native Americans. The letters document life in the military on the frontier, describing court-martials, camp life, battles, etc.
Miscellaneous family documents include Micajah's pilot license, Eugene's report cards from Sacramento High School, etc.
