Architecture -- California -- Sacramento -- History
Note:
Sacramento's State Library and Courts Building #1 forms half of the "Capitol Extension Group"along with the almost identical-looking
Office Building #1 it faces across Capitol Mall . This project began in 1913 to keep state offices from migrating to San Francisco.
The architectural firm of Weeks and Day won the contract to design the buildings which, after much delay and litigation, were
finally completed in 1927. This group won nomination to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. In 2009, the Library
and Courts Building was emptied of its books and staff in preparation for a long-needed retrofit and restoration.
