Note:
John Murphy was born in Ireland. Although most records list his birth date as 1835 or 1836, his grave marker in Gilroy, California
gives it as July 10, 1841. By 1854 Murphy had emigrated to Boston and left for California the same year. He first went to
Trinity County where he mined for a year, then became a lawyer and was elected Trinity County District Attorney in 1860. Murphy
held the position of County Judge from 1864 to 1868. Suffering from health problems and needing a milder climate, Murphy moved
first to Monterey and then to Gilroy, where he owned a newspaper for a brief time and afterwards became a rancher. In 1872
he married Sarah Hannah, the daughter of a prestigious family, who died at the age of 29 in 1881. John Murphy died in Gilroy
in 1886.
