Abstract:

Holograph letter written and signed by Jacob J. Weaver from Uniontown, Maryland to Mrs. Wilmot G. Holmes in Charleston, South Carolina to inform her that her copy of "Manual of Military Surgery", written by his late friend Dr. Julian Chisolm, is valuable because it was issued by the Authority of a Confederate Copyright. The letter also mentions that he's sending to her society a Civil War relic, half of a cannon ball shot from one of two cannons given to the Confederate Government by the Chamber of Commerce of the City of Liverpool, England at the beginning of the war. The cannons, posted at Seminary Ridge, were attached to General Lee's army and used on the field of Gettysburg, and the ball was broken by striking one of the rocks protecting Federal Forces on Cemetery HIll.
