Note:

Hiram Ulysses Grant was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio on April 27, 1822. His 1839 nomination to the United States Military Academy at West Point mistakenly identified him as "Ulysses S. Grant." Under this name he became a career soldier and fought in the Mexican War. His career culminated during the Civil War when he successfully defeated several different Confederate armies, was named by President Lincoln as Commander of the Union Armies, and accepted Confederate General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox. Elected 18th President of the United States in 1868, Grant's two terms of office helped stabilize the country by enforcing Reconstruction and the rights of Blacks and Native Americans and pursued a generally successful foreign policy, but were dogged by numerous charges of corruption in his administration and by a weak economy. After leaving office in 1877 Grant and his wife embarked on a world tour which took them to Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. After an unsuccessful bid for a third presidential term in 1880, Grant wrote his memoirs and died in Wilton, New York on July 23, 1885.
