supply diverted from the Colorado River, particularly regarding flooding and silt deposit. This was during the period when
the irrigation system, which had been owned and operated by the California Development Company, was formally purchased by
the Southern Pacific Railroad and then sold to the Imperial Irrigation District.

Note:
Even though plans to irrigate the southeast California desert eventually known as the Imperial Valley were made as early as
1859, it was not until 1901 that the California Development Company began contruction of gates and canals diverting water
into that area from the Colorado River. Major floods over the next few years prompted the Southern Pacific Railroad, which
operated rail service through the affected area, to pay the repair costs itself, essentially giving the railroad control over
the California Development Company until it sold the operation to the Imperial Irrigation District in 1916.
