Abstract:

Five holograph letters about the reunion of the 4th Massachusetts Regiment Infantry. The first holograph letter consists of seven notes to Doctor J. F. Gould [Joseph F. Gould] in South Boston, Massachusetts in response to his postal card regarding the reunion. The first note, dated August 26, 1874 in New Cambria, Missouri and signed with the name E. W. Nortoni [Edward M. Norton], states that Norton received the postal card relative to the reunion and nothing would afford him more pleasure than to attend, but he's doubtful he can join due to ill health and business pursuits. A note at the end states: "Dr. Nortoni's [Norton's] address is now Del Delight Benton Co. Mo.". The second note, dated August 27, 1874 from Kingston, Massachusetts and signed with the name H. B. Maglathlin [Henry B. Maglathlin], states that a reunion of the Fourth would be agreeable and the last one was held at a place and time that he couldn't attend.
The third note, dated August 25, 1874 from Randolph, Massachusetts and signed with the name H. C. Alden [Hiram C. Alden], states that he's in favor of the reunion and he has attended many meetings on the subject the last two years at Col. Walker's office but nothing came of it. The fourth note, signed with the name Nelson Mann, states that he thinks the reunion should, by all means, take place if everyone will come into it throwing away all of the old feeling. The fifth note, from Newport, Rhode Island and signed with the name Augus Crocker [Augustus Crocker], states that a reunion would be enjoyable if it could take place later in the fall. The sixth note, from Pembroke, Massachusetts and signed with the name H. C. Sampson [Horatio C. Sampson], states that he's anxious to have the reunion and would like Gould to write him about it. The seventh note, signed with the name L. B.
Goodwin [Le'Baron Goodwin], states that he would like to be counted in for the reunion but he's not able to give it any time, and Gould should write him about it at B+A. R. R. Repair Shop in Boston, [Massachusetts]. The second letter consists of eight notes. The first note is dated August 26, 1874 from Abington, [Massachusetts] and signed with the name Chas. W. Howland [Charles W. Howland], states that the reunion would secure his cooperation since he considers it a satisfaction to grasp the hands of those who were true men in the time of peril, and he would even greet J. Waldock [James Waldock] and the Chaplain [Samuel E. Pierce] kindly for the sake of the Old 4th. The second note, dated September 2, 1874 from 42 Court Street, Boston, [Massachusetts] and signed with the name Henry Walker, states that he has spent time and money to get the reunion started and he will do all in his power to further any plan agreed upon.
The third note, dated August 23, 1874 from Lawrence, [Massachusetts] and signed with the name John R. Rollins, states that a reunion would be pleasant with Col. W. omitted since the boys had all they wanted of him during the war and will not get together with him. The fourth note, dated Thursday, August 27, 1874 and signed with the initial E. T. C. [Eben T. Colby], states that he would render aid for the reunion and he thinks it will be well-attended. The fifth note, dated September 2, 1874 from Lawrence, Massachusetts and signed with the name George S. Merrill, states "I'm agreed". The sixth note, dated August 25, 1874 from Taunton, [Massachusetts] and signed with the name J. T. Lothrope [Thomas J. Lothrop], states that he would be for the reunion if it would heal rather than initiate old sores.
The seventh note, dated September 1st,1874 from South Abington, Massachusetts and signed with the name Lewis Soule, states that he consulted with several old comrades who are generally in favor of the reunion and he would like to do what he can to make it happen, preferably early in the fall in Boston, the most convenient place. The eighth note, signed with the name James Waldock, states that a reunion would be pleasant but he has been disabled by a severe illness for a long time and will not be able to enjoy it. A third holograph letter, written on official stationery of A Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, Headquarters Commandery of the State of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, is dated October 21, 1884 and addressed to Capt. J. R. Rollins [John R. Rollins]. Written and signed by John P. Nicholson, the letter asks whether Rollins can spare him copies of Dr. Gould's book which he would be pleased to pay for.
It also asks that Rollins let him know when his history [book] will be ready and he will order at least 6 copies. The third holograph letter, written and signed by James Beale from War Literature, 719 Sansom Street, Philadelphia, PA and dated October 28, 1884, states that he understands the recipient is preparing a History of the 4th Massachusetts Volunteers and he would like to know the price when the work is ready since he will need several copies. The fifth holograph letter, dated November 12, 1884, is written and signed by Henry Barstow from Island Creek, Plymouth County, Massachusetts to Captain Rollins. The letter states that as a member of Company I, 4th Regiment, he's glad there's a reunion and if Rollins needs information on Company I, he's willing to assist.
