Note:
John Y. Mason was Secretary of the Navy from March 26, 1844 - March 10, 1845, and again from Sept. 10, 1846 - March 7, 1849.
He was born in Greensville County, VA on April 18, 1799, and served in the House of Representatives, as U.S. Attorney General,
and as U.S. Minister Plenipotentiary to France. Mason died in Paris on October 3, 1859.
Hiram Cummings was born in Concord, VT on Sept. 16, 1810. He married Lavina Soule in Duxbury, MA on June 14, 1835, and arrived
in San Francisco as a gold-seeker on Sept. 1, 1849. A Methodist (later Congregationalist) minister, Cummings headed congregations
in several Mother Lode towns, and was chaplain at San Quentin prison from 1880-1882. He died in San Francisco on December
10, 1887; his wife followed him two years later.
George S.S. Getchell was born in Machias, ME in 1819, married Elizabeth Farnworth in 1842, and arrived in San Francisco in
May of 1850. Settling first in the Eureka area, he and his wife moved to Nevada County in 1855, where he held several county
offices. Getchell died on Oct. 25, 1887.
