Note:
George Sterling was born in Sag Harbor, Long Island, New York, in 1869, and became exposed to poetry while studying for the
priesthood. He came to California after dropping his studies, became the protege of Amrose Bierce, and became a renowned poet.
Sterling also became acquainted with Jack London, joined the Bohemian Club, and became the focus of a local art colony after
he and his wife moved to Carmel. In 1911, he took Clark Ashton Smith on as his protege. Sterling committed suicide in 1926.
