Abstract:

Eleven holograph letters written and signed by George Taylor to his family about his experience as a private in Company D of the 104th Illinois Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War. The eleven letters include personal correspondence about family members and mutual friends, his early camp experiences in Illinois, the regiment's formation, and the regiment's marches to and skirmishes in Tennessee and Kentucky. Taylor further describes illness among the troops, some casualties, the capture of rebel prisoners, and military maneuvers and engagements. He further mentions news, incidents, and rumors concerning various military commanders, including Major General Joseph Hooker, General Gordon Granger, General Stephen G. Burbridge, General Ulysses S. Grant, Major General Will "Bull" Nelson, General Jefferson C. Davis, General Don Carlos Buell, Captain Samuel M. Heslet, and Confederate General Braxton Bragg. Taylor also describes some details of regimental encampments in locations such as: Camp Brentwood, Tennessee; Camp Dick Robinson, Tennessee; Camp Gilbert, Kentucky; Camp Wilder, Tennessee and along the Cumberland River.
