Florence Dickens Gray, a resident of Berkeley, California, lived in the Cordonices Park area of the city and spent much of her life working on its development and preservation. Berkeley's landmark Rose Walk, one of the main features of the Cordonices Park complex, was designed by Bernard Maybeck and constructed in 1913. In 1924, on the heels of the1923 fire that destroyed many homes around Rose Walk, Dr. B. Frank Gray and his wife Florence purchased land between Rose Walk and the Berryman Reservoir. They built Cordonices Road and commissioned architect Henry Higby Gutterson to create an integrated community of houses on lots bordering the Rose Walk. This development was completed in 1936. In 1959, Rose Walk was declared a Treasure of Civic Art and a protected landmark by the Civic Art Commission. Florence Gray was a member of Citizens' Group for Preservation of the Cordonices Park Complex, which advocated successfully during the 1960s for the restoration of Rose Walk and the surrounding area.
