Florence Freehof was born in Nebraska on August 27, 1909. After she moved to San Francisco, she introduced Israeli dance and music to Northern California. She wrote and published many books on her interest in dance including: Jews are a Dancing People (1954); Rhythm Games and Dances for Jewish Juniors (1958); New Dances from Israel (1960); and A Guide for Israeli-Jewish-Folk Dancers: a Complete Bibliography of all Printed Works in the United States and Israel (1963). She was a founder of the Rikudon dance group and involved in the Friends of Shaare Zedek Hospital and in Pioneer Women, an American organization that gives assistance to the women and children of Israel and which is known as Na'amat USA. Her husband, Louis Freehof (1904-1980), was a Director of San Francisco's Congregation Emanu-El and later of the city's Sinai Memorial Chapel (Chevra Kadisha). Her brother-in-law, Solomon Freehof, was the Rabbi of Congregation Rodeg Sholem, in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Florence Freehof died on February 15, 1994.
