Collection Overview

Title:

Edith Schnaittacher's Photograph Album, [between 1895 and 1910]

Abstract:

The cloth-bound volume contains 19 gelatin silver prints and 10 cyanotype prints which document Golden Gate Park, Cliff House, and scenes from Mill Valley including the local Catholic Church, the railroad to Mt. Tamalpais, Elizabeth Birnbaum's collies, and a cottage on Buena Vista Avenue. Hand-written captions, which describe most pictures and appear to have been added later, place the date range as early 1900's. The album includes one hand-colored print and six loose prints. The album cover is red fabric over cardboard and is decorated with a metal "ALBUM" onlay. The end piece is decorated with the name "Edith Schnaittacher" and ink drawings of a fairy, a bird, three flowers, and a dog.

Date:

1895 (issued)

Subject:

Birnbaum, Elizabeth

Many of the captions mention Ms. Elizabeth Birnbaum, but it is unclear whether she was the photographer or not. A majority of the captions seem to be written by Nellie Hunter, wife of William A. Hunter, to whom Elizabeth Birnbaum left her Mill Valley cottage upon her death in 1938. It is unclear how Edith Schnaittacher is related to the prints.
