Note:

Epes Ellery was born in Gloucester, Maine on April 30, 1830 and in his youth served a five-year apprenticeship with Boston bookbinders Henry Kitfield and Henry A. Gane. He came to San Francisco in 1853 aboard a bark commanded by his father, and the following year opened the Antiquarian Book Store, the city's first such establishment, with Augustus Doyle. Two years later Ellery bought out his partner, expanded into larger quarters, and remained in the book business until 1863. In subsequent years he became involved in real estate and mining concerns.
