Abstract:

One holograph letter, dated 13th July 1859, written and signed by Charles Sumner in London about his improving health, his return for the opening of Congress, and how much he detests slavery. One photocopy of a holograph letter, dated 4th May 1854, written and signed by Charles Sumner in the Senate Chamber, to a governor, about how the government should adopt policies to end slavery and promote liberty and freedom according to the original policy of the Fathers.

Charles Sumner served as United States Senator from Massachusetts from April 24, 1851 to March 11, 1874. He was the leader of antislavery forces in Massachusetts and he worked to free all the slaves and to keep on good terms with Europe during the American Civil War.
