Abstract:
Collection contains correspondence, photographs, and other printed ephemera relating to Alfred J. Shepherd's naval career
in Taiwan, Japan, and Guam during and after World War II. Materials are primarily from his time in post-war Taiwan as a lieutenant
in the U.S. Navy MAAG (Military Assistance Advisory Group). Items include invitations to various events (mostly in Chinese,
some with English translations in pencil), Christmas cards, Taiwanese yen, items relating to various clubs and fraternal societies,
black and white photographs of naval ships and bomb testing explosions, identification cards including an air raid shelter
pass, local business cards, and clippings relating to Shepherd's activities. Locations mentioned include Kaohsiung (Taiwan);
Iwo Jima, Kyoto (Japan); Guam; Hong Kong (China); U.S. Naval Base at Key West (Florida). Bomb testing photos, which include
a photo of the USS Dixie, may have been taken in Bikini Atoll.
